ABOUT

I take an energizing approach to program administration in higher education by looking closely at how academics can best support students who have traditionally faced significant barriers or moments of transition in the first year of college and beyond.

As the author of three books -- including Parenting While PhDing: Surviving and Improving the Working Conditions of Graduate Student Parents, released by Rutgers University Press in 2025 -- I research and advocate for student parents, foster-care alumni, developmental writers, and dual credit students. Currently, I serve as Co-Director of the First-Year Experience, Coordinator of the First-Year Seminar, and an Associate Professor of English at Texas Woman's University (TWU) in Denton, TX. Prior to these appointments, I directed TWU's First-Year Composition (FYC) Program for seven years.

As an award-winning scholar and teacher, I am passionate about researching and designing academic programs that allow students, faculty, and staff to thrive. In 2024, my work with the FYC Program was awarded the NCTE-CCC Writing Program Certificate of Excellence, and later that year another program I built, Pioneer Prep, was recognized as "Best Program of the Year" by the Texas College Academic Support Programs (CASP) for exceptional work in supporting developmental education and placement for first-year students. Within my institution, I have been awarded the prestigious Mary Mason Lyon Award for Distinguished Junior Faculty (2024), TWU's Distinction in Teaching Award (2025), and the Distinguished Service to Student Life Award (2025). The latter honor recognized my efforts to institute a summer bridge program for foster-case alumni on her campus (TWU's FAST Academy), for which I also taught and am very proud to support.

I hold a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition from Texas Christian University, and I live in Texas with my husband and four children. In my free time, I run or take long walks, bake or make humble attempts at creating art, and try new recipes or enjoy salted dark chocolate in the still of quiet moments.
